Hi there! I’m Dr. Ogul E. Uner. I am a Vitreoretinal Surgery and Disease Fellow at Tennessee Retina in Nashville. I created this website to share my experiences, connect with mentees, and help out people in their medical journey!

A little more about me: I am fellowship-trained in Uveitis & Inflammatory Diseases at Casey Eye Institute of Oregon Health & Science University, where I also completed my ophthalmology residency, served as Chief Resident, and was a Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Resident Retreat participant. I obtained my M.D. Summa Cum Laude from Emory University School of Medicine as the class valedictorian, Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society inductee, and Gold Humanism Honor Society member. A 2017 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, I completed my bachelor’s degree in biology with a concentration in neurobiology, Summa Cum Laude, with departmental distinction.

I am a uveitis specialist and soon-to-be vitreoretinal surgeon. I have a particular clinical interest in uveitic and neoplastic masquerade syndromes, vitreoretinal surgery in uveitis, and novel drug targets in retina and uveitis. My research interests include real-world big data in retina and uveitis, retinal image-based artificial intelligence, and clinical epidemiology of posterior segment diseases. I have published over 35 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in journals such as Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, and RETINA. I am an ad-hoc peer reviewer for several journals, including Ophthalmology Retina, Ophthalmology Science, Nature Scientific Reports, Ophthalmic Epidemiology, and Journal of VitreoRetinal Diseases.

My professional interests include playing an active role in mentoring the next generation of physicians from diverse backgrounds. I use social media as a platform to mentor, learn, and share my life in and out of the white coat to thousands of unique users worldwide. As a first-generation immigrant who came to the United States on his own and completed his entire medical training on a visa, I did not have a role model who shared my background and understood the significant challenges I would face navigating American medical training as an international student. I hope to close that gap and grow to become that person for several people.

In my free time, I like to try new cuisines and cook with my partner who is also a physician, meditate, play the flute, watch Turkish TV, read, dabble in backgammon, and explore our beautiful world.
